Created by Adrienne Smith, Boston Renegades Wide Receiver, football advocate and spokesperson, Orange is the New Black actress, and entrepreneur, Blitz Champz is a family-friendly, tech-free solution for today’s COVID age and emphasizes the importance of learning critical math skills while having fun.
“Blitz Champz was created to empower kids with the ability to strategize and experience the one-of-a-kind magic a competitive, action-packed card game can bring,” said Ms. Smith, Blitz Champz creator. “Designed as a tool for both educators and families, Blitz Champz is meant to be played in school, at home, and on-the-go. A game of both skill and luck, while reinforcing math skills for students in grades 3-8, everyone has a chance to win.”
A 2017 National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA) winner, and a selected product at Walmart’s 2018 Annual Open Call Event, Blitz Champz captures the spirit of football with real field play, including offensive and defensive moves, passes, runs, completions, fumbles—and even the unpredictable blitz and Hail Mary. Players must strategize their gameplay based on the cards they’ve drawn and use mental math to advance their play or send their opponents back to defeat. The game takes two minutes to learn and can be played by 2-6 people in 30 minutes or less.
A longtime advocate for girls and women athletes and professional sports, Ms. Smith and Blitz Champz frequently host online football workshops featuring seasoned instructors like Mo Streety, elite football trainer; Odessa Jenkins, Founder of the Women’s National Football Conference; and Jen Welter, the first female NFL football coach.
“Promoting the excitement and positivity of football, while subtly teaching math fundamentals, is Blitz Champz’s mission,” Ms. Smith stated. “Children need unplugged play to stimulate creativity and critical thinking. Girls need to see more women involved in sports at all levels to consider sports a viable career path. Educators and families are seeking solutions that educate and inspire. Blitz Champz is an accessible, affordable tool that keeps kids learning, having fun and aiming for life’s great touchdowns.”
Since 2011, Ms. Smith has played for the Boston Renegades, a tackle football team in the Women's Football Alliance and winner of national championships in 2011, 2014, 2018, and 2019. Her professional career began in Japan, where she worked as a translator and Coordinator of International Relations for the Japanese Board of Education. During her two years in this position, Adrienne produced and co-hosted a local television show geared towards educating Japanese people about American culture. Ms. Smith earned her MBA from Columbia Business School in Media & Entertainment; and her Bachelor’s degree in Japanese and Film, with a Pre-Med concentration from Washington University in St. Louis.
